FUM Visits Ciudad Victoria

On November 27, 2023, Iglesia de Los Amigos Ciudad Victoria celebrated their 150th anniversary. It was a time of joyful celebration and sorrow as they remembered many of their ancestors that are no longer among us. During the service, the youngest family member went up to share how many generations their family had been in the church. Most of the church had been members for three to five generations. There were many tears among the attenders as they remembered their great-grandparents, grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles praying in that sanctuary, or weddings, funerals, and baby dedications.

Baragoi Friends Church a Beacon of Hope

In Kenya, Baragoi is a name which inspires fear when mentioned—it is a place that outsiders associate with death, aggressiveness, and unfriendliness. With a nickname like “valley of death,” it is easy to imagine that the moment you step into Baragoi you will be killed.Baragoi is in Samburu County, at least a two- to three-hour drive high on the plains above Maralal.

Be that Swell

A good director, when the choir is lost, offers a metaphor—a way for the singers to imagine themselves in the song again. It’s a bodily metaphor, because singing is a bodily function and there’s no un-embodied way to do it. And, perhaps, there’s no un-embodied way to gather in worship together. In our silent time, together we wait: a quiet choir waiting for a cue from an unseen director.
