“You are my friends if you do as I command.” On banners, needlepoint, or bulletin boards, I saw this verse (John 15:14) in a number of the Cuban Quaker churches I visited with the FUM General Board. This particular banner hangs in the sanctuary at Holguin.
Friendship and warmth seemed to be a hallmark of the Cuban Friends we visited, traveling from church to church. Friendship (genuine friendship, not just Quaker identity, what any American on the street would describe as friendship) seemed foundational to their faith. Friendship for each other, for their neighbors, and for we who were strangers.
