Field Staff Changes in Belize

During the recent gathering of the General Board, FUM’s General Secretary, Kelly Kellum announced the resignation of Oscar and Miriam Mmbali, who serve as our field-staff in Belize. Seven years ago, Oscar accepted the call to serve in Belize as FUM’s church planting pastor. When Oscar and Miriam were married, she joined him in the ministry. In 2024, Oscar became the director of FUM-Belize.

The list of some of their ministry accomplishments in Belize is significant.

  • Mentoring Belizean pastors
  • Initiating outreach campaigns to address community needs
  • Establishing a Sunday School
  • Developing the Young Friends mentorship programs
  • Starting the Belize USFW program
  • Securing grants to fund activities
  • Providing scholarship programs
  • Launching the “Grocery Bag” program to support vulnerable members of the South Side community.

Kelly writes, “They were pioneer missionaries who are foundational in establishing the Friends Church in Belize. The Belize church and school will deeply miss them, so will the wider FUM Community. We are grateful that Oscar answered God's call when he was a student at Friends Theological College to serve as a missionary. We are also grateful that Oscar and Mariam found each other and became partners in God’s work. We pray that God will richly bless them as they discern new callings and places of service.”

Oscar and Miriam have been praying about the decision to leave Belize, and it has become clear to them that they should focus on their family’s medical needs.  They will continue to serve in Belize until January 2026 and will need our full financial support until then. If you are currently giving to their ministry account, please continue. Kelly will be working with them and other members of the community to discern the future staffing and leadership needs for FUM’s work in Belize.
