FUM-Belize started as a small school for at-risk boys, and now it is something much larger and more dynamic. Not only does the school welcome girls, but the church is also growing, and the Friends Center is having a significant impact on the south-side of Belize City.
God is at work in Belize City. It seems as if God has been out in front, guiding Friends United Meeting’s amazing staff team in Belize. The Belize Friends Church started with a worship group of eight people in 2017. The church in Belize has expanded to include approximately sixty-five youth and adults, along with twelve toddlers. Most of that growth happened through outreach projects connected to the church and the Friends Center. The church provides over sixty grocery bags to families every month and finished this past year with a surplus.
A few years ago, the church started supporting one child to attend school with a scholarship. Last year, they supported twenty students with scholarships. The Friends Centre has also done outreach projects in their community, like providing human trafficking awareness and gang resistance training to about 500 youths. Last year, through a back-to-school drive, the centre provided 175 kids with school supplies, haircuts, and braiding.
With the growth occurring in Belize, FUM is being challenged to “right-size” our financial, communications, and administrative procedures. In April, Michael Sherman, Coordinator for North America and Caribbean Ministries, and Kira Young, Financial Services Director, will visit Belize to work with our staff to initiate vital changes that will serve FUM’s expanding ministry.
Michael notes, “We feel the anxiousness of expected blessing, and delight at the beginning of something new. God is on the move at Belize Friends Ministries.”
