This Friday, October 7, Friends Theological College will be having a Harambee—a community fundraiser—for the building of a new men’s residence hall (hostel). The goal is to raise 30 million Kenya shillings (approximately $300,000 USD) in three phases of 10 million Kenya shillings each. Funds raised in the first phase are designated for breaking ground and laying the foundation for the new hostel.
FTC has invited all the Yearly Meetings in Kenya to participate in this project. On September 16, Dr. Robert Wafula, principal of FTC, met with general superintendents from the Kenyan Yearly Meetings to discuss the Harambee, how they can be involved in the academic progress at FTC, and how they can work together with FTC.
Nairobi Yearly Meeting has taken the lead. The clerk and the general superintendent are working together with all the other Yearly Meetings in Kenya. Nairobi Yearly Meeting has assigned a figure foreach of its monthly meetings or churches to bring, and the expectation is for other Yearly Meetings to do the same. If each Yearly Meeting responds positively with the amount assigned, a substantial amount can be raised to begin laying the foundation. This will then lead to a motivation to raise more funds.

The plans are to construct a three story building with the capacity to house one hundred people, which will be located in the space between the existing Upper House (residence hall for men) and the street, near the gate.
The hostel will host FTC students and also include a section rented out to Kaimosi University students—a source of income as the college works towards self-sufficiency. As enrollment at FTC increases, the new dormitory will be a way to provide more room for students. The goal is to complete the building by 2020, when FTC hopes to have 200 students.
