On October 26, the Lower School of Ramallah Friends School, having been awarded the Green School Award for the academic year of 2016–2017 as part of Ramallah Municipality’s environmental program, was officially named Ramallah’s 2016 Healthy and Environmentally-Friendly School. The recognition events included a special flag and flag-raising ceremony at the school; an arts exhibit presenting recycling projects made by RFS students; and fourth-graders performing environmentally-themed songs that were written and composed by RFS teachers.
Lower School Principal Ms. Frieda Dahdah spoke of the various activities at the school over the past year which aimed to encourage children to modify their behavior and educate others about environmental issues. Students at the school have learned to moderate their consumption of water and electricity, recycle and reuse solid waste, renovate and improve upon their school’s organic garden, as well as take part or lead other environmental projects in cooperation with local environmental groups or official committees.
RFS is honored to see the Green School flag fluttering above the campus as they celebrate winning the award for the second time in five years, and affirming their commitment to the Quaker testimony of environmental stewardship.
